Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ODM, JDM, EMS, and OEM?

ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) is Mobiwire's most common collaboration model. Mobiwire works with you to set product specifications and requirements, then designs and manufactures the product. You bring the product to market under your own brand and benefit from working with one design and manufacturing partner that handles everything from R&D to production.

JDM (Joint Development Manufacturing) is a collaborative model where your team takes an active role in design alongside Mobiwire's engineering team, while Mobiwire handles manufacturing. This model works best with long-term partners who have some in-house design expertise.

EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) is a manufacturing-only model. You provide a finished design; Mobiwire handles sourcing, production and quality control. While most of Mobiwire's customers leverage Mobiwire's R&D capabilities through an ODM or JDM model, EMS is common in industries such as automotive, medical, and aerospace, where companies own their own designs.

OEM is when Mobiwire is branding and selling a product as a “Mobiwire” product. This is an uncommon model for Mobiwire and typically only applies to our subcomponent or module businesses. Note: OEM is a term used inconsistently in the industry — in consumer electronics it is often used interchangeably with ODM.

What product categories do you work across?

Mobiwire’s core verticals are Consumer, Fintech & Payments, Industrial, Medical & Health, Automotive, and Aerospace

Consumer covers smartphones, tablets, and mobile broadband devices. Fintech & Payments covers Android Smart POS, SoftPOS, card readers, and payment terminals. Industrial covers rugged PDAs, barcode-scanning devices, and other IoT devices. Medical & Health covers FDA-certified medical devices and health terminals. Automotive covers in-vehicle electronics and infotainment systems. Aerospace covers drones and airborne electronics.

How long does it take to develop a new product?

A product built on an existing Mobiwire platform can reach production readiness in as little as four months. Products requiring new tooling, bespoke hardware, or third-party certification — FCC, CE, PCI PTS, EMV — typically take nine to twelve months or longer. Certification timelines are the most variable factor; Mobiwire manages the certification process and advises on scope and timing during product definition.

What is your lead time?

For mature designs with no significant hardware changes, production lead time is typically 40 days from order confirmation, and can be as short as 20 days where lines are pre-configured and components are pre-stocked.

New products require additional development time separate to the production lead time — see the relevant FAQ regarding product development timelines.

What is your Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?

MOQs depend on product category.

Consumer devices typically run 3,000 to 10,000 units; industrial, aerospace, and specialized hardware can be as low as 100 units. For startups and other low-volume programs, we can offer options for lower MOQs with the fixed overhead costs of a production run quoted separately.

Do you provide engineering services?

Yes. Engineering is a core part of Mobiwire's ODM offering, covering hardware design, firmware development, industrial design, and certification.

Integrating engineering and manufacturing under one roof has many advantages: design iterations are validated on the production line, tooling decisions account for manufacturing constraints from the outset, there are no handoffs between vendors, and the end product is usually produced at higher quality and more quickly.

Mobiwire does not generally offer standalone engineering without an associated manufacturing program.

Do you provide software and firmware support?

Yes — Android BSP development, firmware customization, application pre-loading, and OTA infrastructure are standard parts of the ODM offering. For payment devices, payment application integration and certification support are included. Post-launch firmware and security updates can be structured as part of the commercial agreement.

Can I customize a white-label product?

Yes. Hardware customization typically covers branding, color and materials, camera configuration, battery capacity, and accessories. Software customization covers Android launcher, application pre-loading, OTA update management, and firmware configuration. Custom tooling and bespoke industrial design are available for partners requiring an exclusive product specification.

What certifications can you support?

Mobiwire has 30 years of certification experience across consumer, fintech, industrial, medical, and aerospace programs.

For connectivity devices: FCC, CE, PTCRB, and carrier acceptance testing for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

For payment devices: PCI and EMV L1 & L2.

For industrial and rugged: IP ratings up to IP68, MIL-STD-810, UL, and drop standard validation.

For aerospace: DO-160G environmental qualification.

For medical: FDA, IEC 60601, and CE Medical.

Quality and environmental: ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Do you work with startups?

Yes. Mobiwire works with companies at all stages. For startups, pay-as-you-go arrangements can reduce upfront capital requirements, and program structure is flexible for organizations that don’t yet have dedicated supply chain or regulatory functions in place. Early-stage partners get access to the same engineering and manufacturing infrastructure as larger customers.

Can you support carrier approval and network operator programs?

Yes. Mobiwire supports PTCRB certification, carrier acceptance testing for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, and operator-specific device configuration and provisioning requirements. For operators with a specific technical and commercial brief, Mobiwire’s JDM model is well suited to this type of program.

What are your sustainability and environmental compliance capabilities?

Mobiwire holds ISO 14001 environmental management certification. All exported products meet RoHS compliance, and devices using post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials are available for partners with eco-design requirements. WEEE and EU packaging compliance are supported for European market programs. SAR testing is standard for all radio devices.

How is intellectual property handled?

IP ownership is defined in the commercial agreement before work begins, and Mobiwire operates under NDA throughout. Partners retain ownership of proprietary software and design elements they bring to the program. Mobiwire’s platform IP is licensed to the partner for use in the program. Mobiwire has managed IP-sensitive programs for some of the world’s largest consumer brands and carriers, with relationships running a decade or more.

Do you offer after-sales and warranty support?

Yes — warranty repair, spare parts, and returns management are available, with scope defined in the commercial agreement. Ongoing firmware and security update support can be included as a managed service. Mobiwire’s operational baseline: a device annual failure rate below 1% and an on-time delivery rate above 96%.

Where are your manufacturing facilities?

Mobiwire manufactures in China and Romania. The China facility is ISO 9001 certified with the most diverse manufacturing capabilities and highest throughput. The Romania facility serves European, North American, and aerospace and defense customers for whom supply chain proximity or security matters. Mobiwire's offices are in Paris, Shenzhen, Boston, Bucharest, and Ningbo.
